The 50 cent note issued by the Melun Chamber of Commerce in 1915 is a testament to alternative monetary issues during the context of the First World War. This note features an elaborate architectural frame on its front, framing the essential information. The denomination "CINQUANTE CENTIMES" in capital letters is found there, as well as the identification of the issuer, "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE MELUN". The signatures of the Treasurer and the President are affixed, accompanied by a unique serial number, here 038615, and the date of issue, October 15, 1915. The abbreviation "CM" appears at the top left and right.
The back of the note is adorned with two central medallions. The left medallion displays three crowned heraldic shields, potential symbols of cities or institutions linked to the Chamber of Commerce. A winged caduceus, a traditional attribute of commerce, is placed under the shields, flanked by an olive branch, a symbol of peace and prosperity. The right medallion features an ornamental frame decorated with a branch, possibly a stylized representation of nature or agriculture. The indication "50. C" is also found on either side of the medallions.
Several inscriptions appear on the back. The years "1915-1920" indicate the period of validity of the note. The mention "MELUN - PROVINS - FONTAINEBLEAU" suggests the geographical extent of the jurisdiction of the Chamber of Commerce. An important clause specifies that the note had to be presented for reimbursement to the Banque de France in Melun before October 15, 1920. The face value "50. C" is repeated, ensuring clear identification. The note has no watermark.
