The 50-centime banknote issued by the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce, dated January 16, 1915, is a testament to local monetary issues in France during the First World War. This banknote is part of the CCC Series and features a unique serial number, illustrated here by [004,571].
On the front, the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BAYONNE" can be read in capital letters, indicating the issuing institution. The mention "DELIBERATION DU [16-01-1915]" specifies the date of the decision authorizing the issuance of this banknote. The face value, "50 centimes," is clearly displayed. The signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce are also present, authenticating the banknote. An important note indicates that this banknote is "Echangeable contre des billets de la Banque de France," ensuring its convertibility into national currency.
The reverse of the banknote bears the inscription "DEPARTEMENT DES BASSES-PYRENEES," geographically locating the issue. A redemption clause is stipulated: "Ce billet devra être présenté au remboursement avant le [1er Mars 1920]," setting a deadline for its exchange. The inscriptions are written in Latin.
This type of emergency banknote was common during times of economic crisis, when metallic coins were scarce. Chambers of Commerce, municipalities, and other local institutions were then authorized to issue their own currency to facilitate commercial transactions. These banknotes are now sought-after collector's items for their historical value and rarity.
