Description

Remarks:

Plis, salissures

The 50 centimes coin issued in 1914 by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce is among the very first emergency coins to appear at the beginning of the First World War. The rapid disappearance of metallic currency, hoarded by the population or used for the war effort, created an immediate shortage of small change, making local solutions essential.

In this context, the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce, a major port city and important economic center, issued these tokens to maintain fluid commercial exchanges and support local activity. These coins circulated as genuine means of payment, although they were not official state issues.

The obverse features a simple and functional composition, with the inscription ?CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BORDEAUX?, the face value ?50 CENTIMES?, and the year 1914. The typography is clear and legible, designed for intensive daily use.

The reverse adopts a sober style, often adorned with discreet decorative motifs or geometric elements. The overall design remains utilitarian, without advanced artistic pursuit, in accordance with the temporary nature of these tokens.

From a technical point of view, these pieces are minted in aluminum or light alloys, materials chosen due to the shortage of traditional metals such as copper or silver. Their lightness and appearance clearly distinguish them from classic coins.

This coin had a local and temporary circulation, mainly in the Bordeaux region. It was gradually withdrawn after the war, once national currency production was restored. It no longer has legal tender status today.

From a numismatic perspective, the 1914 Bordeaux 50 centimes is a particularly interesting piece due to its early nature among emergency issues. It serves as direct evidence of the first economic reactions to the conflict. Its value depends on its state of preservation, with well-preserved specimens being more sought after.

Finally, for the collector, this piece embodies the beginning of an exceptional period in French numismatics. It illustrates the rapid adaptation of local structures to a sudden monetary crisis, making these tokens objects of great historical significance.
