Plis de comptage
The 50 centime note from the Amiens Chamber of Commerce, dating from 1915, is a testament to French monetary history. This note, printed by the Imprimerie du Progrès de la Somme, is written in Latin.
On the front, the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE D'AMIENS" can be read in capital letters. The face value, "0.50", is indicated twice, framing the amount "CINQUANTE CENTIMES". The functions of the Treasurer and the 1st Vice-President are mentioned, followed by the serial number "N° 250,365". The mention of the printer, "IMP, PROGRES DE LA SOMME", is also present.
The back of the note repeats the face value "0.50" and the amount "CINQUANTE CENTIMES". It is specified that the issue is guaranteed by a deposit of an equal sum with the Banque de France. The notes are exchangeable on sight for sums of at least Five Francs at the Banque DUVETTE in Amiens. A redemption deadline is stipulated: November 5, 1920, after which the note would be prescribed. It is specified that this note is valid within the jurisdiction of the Amiens Chamber of Commerce, including the cities of Amiens, Doullens and Montdidier.
This note has no watermark. It testifies to a time when local chambers of commerce could issue their own currency in response to specific economic needs.
