Description

Remarks:

Traces d'épinglages.

The 50 centimes banknote issued in 1915 by the Aveyron Chamber of Commerce, marked ?annulé? (cancelled), belongs to the emergency money (monnaies de nécessité) created during the First World War. Facing the disappearance of metallic currency, local institutions were authorized to issue banknotes to maintain economic exchanges.

The Aveyron Chamber of Commerce played an essential role by putting these banknotes into circulation to facilitate transactions within the department. These vouchers compensated for the lack of official currency and ensured the continuity of daily trade.

The obverse features a simple and functional typographical composition including:

  • the inscription ?Chambre de Commerce de l?Aveyron?

  • the face value of 50 centimes

  • the year 1915

  • signatures and guarantee mentions

The reverse is generally sober, with simple decorative borders or additional mentions related to the terms of issuance.

From a technical point of view, these banknotes are printed on paper, using modest processes adapted to the wartime context. They feature basic security elements: numbering, signatures, stamps, intended to limit counterfeiting.

The mention ?annulé? indicates that the note has been withdrawn from circulation, usually after reimbursement or for administrative reasons. This cancellation is often materialized by stamps, perforations, or handwritten annotations, transforming the banknote into an accounting document.

These notes circulated locally, mainly in the Aveyron department, before being gradually withdrawn after the war.

From a numismatic perspective, the 50 centimes Aveyron 1915 ? cancelled is an interesting piece:

  • for its wartime context

  • for its local use

  • for its particular status (cancelled)

Finally, for the collector, this banknote constitutes a concrete testimony to monetary management during wartime. It illustrates both the issuance and withdrawal of emergency money, offering a complete view of the lifecycle of these banknotes.
