Description

The 50 centimes banknote issued in 1915 by the Chamber of Commerce of Aurillac and Cantal, marked ?annulé? (cancelled), belongs to the necessity money created during the First World War. Facing the disappearance of metallic currency, local institutions were authorized to issue banknotes to maintain economic trade.

The Chamber of Commerce of Aurillac and Cantal played an essential role in this system by issuing these banknotes to facilitate transactions in the Cantal department. These vouchers were used locally to compensate for the lack of official currency during the conflict.

The obverse features a simple and functional typographic composition including:

  • the inscription ?Chambre de Commerce d?Aurillac et du Cantal?

  • the face value of 50 centimes

  • the year 1915

  • signatures and guarantee mentions

The reverse is generally sober, with simple decorative frames or additional mentions related to the issuance conditions.

Technically, these banknotes are printed on paper, using modest processes adapted to the wartime context. They include basic security elements: numbering, signatures, stamps, intended to limit counterfeiting.

The mention ?annulé? indicates that the banknote was withdrawn from circulation, usually after reimbursement or for administrative purposes. This cancellation can be materialized by stamps, perforations, or annotations, turning the banknote into an accounting document.

These banknotes circulated locally, mainly in the Aurillac and Cantal region, before being gradually withdrawn after the war.

From a numismatic point of view, the 50 centimes Aurillac 1915 ? cancelled is an interesting piece:

  • for its wartime context

  • for its local use

  • for its particular status (cancelled)

Finally, for the collector, this banknote constitutes a concrete testimony of monetary management in wartime. It illustrates not only the issuance of necessity money but also its withdrawal, thus offering a complete view of the life cycle of these banknotes.
