This is a five-livre assignat issued in France on 10 Brumaire of Year II (October 31, 1793) of the French Republic. This assignat bears the signature of Semen and belongs to series 22355.
The front of this note features a centered textual composition. The face value "5" is highlighted, along with the date of issue and the national motto of the time: "Unité Indivisibilité de la République, Liberté Egalité Fraternité ou la Mort" (Unity Indivisibility of the Republic, Liberty Equality Fraternity or Death). The inscription "Créé le 10 Brumaire l'an 2me de la République Française" precisely locates the issue of this paper money. The designation "Assignat de cinq Livres" confirms its face value. Legal warnings are also present: "La Loi Punit de Mort le Contrefacteur" (The Law Punishes the Counterfeiter with Death) and "La Nation Récompense le Dénonciateur" (The Nation Rewards the Denouncer), highlighting the severity of the penalties against counterfeiting and the incitement to denunciation.
The back of the assignat is blank. A watermark is integrated into the paper. It represents the value "5" and a monogram "RF" (République Française) inscribed in a circle.
The dimensions of this assignat are 94 mm in length and 59 mm in width. A dry stamp is affixed to the lower left of the note. This stamp, with a diameter of 26 mm, represents the Genius of the Constitution seated. It leans on the statue of Artemis, symbol of Nature, to its right, and on the Tables of the Law, where the words "DROIT DE L'HOM" (RIGHT OF MAN) can be distinguished, to its left. This dry stamp was engraved by GATTEAUX.
It should be noted that the total number of assignat series is 28744, with 100 different signatories. The signature on this assignat is that of Semen.
