This five-livre banknote was issued on 10 Brumaire of year II (October 31, 1793) under the First French Republic. It is an assignat, a form of fiat money issued during the French Revolution.
The obverse of the banknote features several important graphic and textual elements. The face value, "5", is placed in the center of the banknote. The issue date is also present. The national motto of France at that time, "Unité Indivisibilité de la République Liberté Egalité Faternité ou la Mort", is inscribed at the top of the banknote. The inscription "Créé le 10 Brumaire l'an 2me de la République Française" specifies the date of creation of the assignat. The inscription "Assignat de cinq Livres" indicates its face value. Legal warnings are also present: "La Loi Punit de Mort le Contrefacteur" and "La Nation Récompense le Dénonciateur". The signature on this assignat is that of Poullain.
The reverse of the banknote is blank. The watermark represents the value "5" and, in a circle, the monogram "RF" (République Française). The blind stamp, located at the bottom left of the assignat, is 26 mm in diameter. It represents the Genius of the Constitution seated, leaning on the right on the statue of Artemis, symbol of Nature, and on the left on the Tables of the Law, on which one can read "DROIT DE L'HOM". This blind stamp was engraved by GATTEAUX.
The dimensions of this banknote are 94 mm in length and 59 mm in width. It is part of a series of 28744 issues, with 100 different signatories.
