This five-livre banknote was issued on 10 Brumaire of Year II (October 31, 1793) under the First French Republic. It is an assignat, a type of paper money issued during the French Revolution.
The front of the banknote features several distinctive elements. In the center, the face value of "five Livres" is highlighted. The issue date is also clearly indicated. The national motto of the French Republic is present: "Unité Indivisibilité de la République, Liberté Egalité Faternité ou la Mort" (Unity Indivisibility of the Republic, Liberty Equality Fraternity or Death). The text includes a warning against counterfeiting, stating that "La Loi Punit de Mort le Contrefacteur" (The Law Punishes the Counterfeiter with Death) while encouraging denunciation, promising that "La Nation Récompense le Dénonciateur" (The Nation Rewards the Denouncer). The signature affixed to this banknote is that of Arnoux.
The back of the banknote is blank. A watermark is present, displaying the value "5" as well as the monogram "RF" (République Française - French Republic) inscribed in a circle.
The dimensions of the assignat are 94 × 59 mm. A dry stamp is affixed to the bottom left of the banknote. This stamp, with a diameter of 26 mm, represents the Genius of the Constitution seated. He leans on the statue of Artemis, symbol of Nature, on his right, and on the Tables of the Law on his left, where we can read "DROIT DE L'HOM" (RIGHT OF MAN). This dry stamp was engraved by GATTEAUX.
It should be noted that the total number of series issued for this type of assignat is 28744, with 100 different signatories whose names are printed on the banknotes.
