The 5 new francs banknote, issued on February 12, 1959, is printed on both sides. It is part of the G.117 series. Its dimensions are 140 millimeters in width and 75 millimeters in height.

On the front of the banknote, there is a portrait of Victor Hugo placed on the right. In the background, a representation of the Pantheon is visible. The face value of "5 NF" is printed twice, and the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE" also appears. The sum of "CINQ NOUVEAUX FRANCS" is written out in full. The name of the engraver, André Marliat, and that of the designer, Clément Serveau, are also indicated.

The back of the banknote features an image of Victor Hugo located on the left. In the background, we see a view of his apartment, Place des Vosges. The face value "5" is repeated twice, accompanied by the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE". An excerpt from Article 139 of the Penal Code is included, recalling the penalties for counterfeiting or falsifying banknotes. The name of the engraver, Robert Armanelli, and that of the designer, Clément Serveau, are also mentioned.

The inscriptions on the banknote are written in the Latin alphabet. This banknote was designed by Clément Serveau, with the participation of engravers André Marliat and Robert Armanelli.
