The 5 Francs Semeuse coin, minted in Proof quality (BE) in 1997, is a commemorative coin of the French Republic. It has a nominal value of 5 francs.
This coin is made from an alloy of Copper and Nickel. It weighs 10 grams and has a diameter of 29 millimeters.
The main motif of this coin is the Semeuse, an allegorical figure of France. The Semeuse is depicted sowing against the wind, a symbol of the Republic spreading its ideas. This motif was created by the engraver Oscar Roty. His work, initially designed for coins and medals, has become emblematic and has been used on French postage stamps.
On the obverse of the coin, we find this representation of the Semeuse. The reverse features the face value "5 Francs" as well as the year of issue, 1997. The inscriptions are surrounded by decorative motifs.
The Proof strike, or Belle Épreuve (BE), indicates a superior striking quality, intended for collectors. Proof coins are struck with particular care, which gives them a brilliant appearance and very sharp details.
The mintage of this coin in Proof strike is 6436 copies.
