The 5 Francs Pasteur banknote, issued on July 7, 1966, is a banknote from the Banque de France. It belongs to the R.23 series. Its dimensions are 140 millimeters in length and 75 millimeters in width.
On the front of the banknote, there is a bust of Louis Pasteur positioned on the left. On the right, a representation of the Pasteur Institute is visible. Plant motifs, notably bunches of grapes, also adorn the front. The face value of "5" and the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE" are written out in full. The face value "5" is repeated twice in numbers. The mention "CINQ FRANCS" is also present. The engraver of this part of the banknote is Gilbert Poilliot, and the designer is Pierrette Lambert.
The back of the banknote also features a bust of Louis Pasteur, this time positioned on the right. On the left, we can distinguish a statue of the shepherd Jupille. In the background, test tubes, a microscope and various scientific instruments are represented. Rabbits, sheep and roosters are integrated into the corners of the banknote. The face value "5" and the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE" are also inscribed on the back. A legal text, Article 139 of the Penal Code, is reproduced in full, warning against the counterfeiting and falsification of banknotes. The engraver of this part of the banknote is Henri Renaud, and the designer is Pierrette Lambert.
The watermark of this banknote represents the head of Louis Pasteur in profile.
