The 5 franc banknote, Pasteur type, issued on July 7, 1966, bears the series reference M.21. Its dimensions are 140 mm in length and 75 mm in width.
On the front (obverse), there is a portrait of Louis Pasteur positioned on the left of the banknote. The Pasteur Institute is depicted on the right. Plant motifs, including bunches of grapes, embellish the whole. The inscriptions include the face value "5" as well as the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE" in capital letters. The value "CINQ FRANCS" is also written out in full.
The back (reverse) of the banknote features another portrait of Louis Pasteur, this time on the right. A statue of the shepherd Jupille is visible on the left. The background consists of scientific elements such as test tubes, a microscope, and various instruments. Representations of rabbits, sheep, and roosters are arranged in the corners.
The inscriptions on the back include the face value "5" and the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE". A legal text is also present, stipulating the penal sanctions incurred for counterfeiting or falsifying banknotes, as well as for their use or introduction into France.
The banknote's watermark represents the head of Louis Pasteur in profile.
The engravers are Gilbert Poilliot and Henri Renaud, while the designer is Pierrette Lambert.
