The 5-franc banknote, issued on July 7, 1966, is dedicated to Louis Pasteur, an emblematic figure of French science. This banknote belongs to the E.13 series.
On the obverse, there is a portrait of Louis Pasteur positioned on the left. On the right, a representation of the Pasteur Institute is visible. Plant motifs, notably grape clusters, embellish the composition. The inscriptions include the face value "5" and the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE", repeated on both sides. The value "CINQ FRANCS" is also inscribed in full. The engraver of this side is Gilbert Poilliot, and the drawing is the work of Pierrette Lambert. The dimensions of the banknote are 140 × 75 mm.
The reverse of the banknote also features a portrait of Louis Pasteur, this time on the right. On the left, a statue of the shepherd Jupille is represented. The background is composed of test tubes, a microscope, and various scientific instruments. Illustrations of rabbits, sheep, and roosters are arranged in the corners. The inscriptions "5" and "BANQUE DE FRANCE" are found there. A legal warning is included, reminding of the penal sanctions for counterfeiting or falsifying banknotes. Henri Renaud is the engraver of this side, and the drawing is also by Pierrette Lambert.
The watermark reveals a profile head of Pasteur, adding an element of security and identification to the banknote.
