The 5 Francs banknote, issued on May 5, 1967, is a product of the Banque de France, identified by the series W.55. It pays tribute to Louis Pasteur, a renowned French scientist.
This banknote measures 140 mm long and 75 mm wide. The obverse features a portrait of Louis Pasteur on the left, accompanied by a representation of the Pasteur Institute on the right. Plant motifs, including bunches of grapes, complete the ensemble. The inscriptions include the nominal value "5" and the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE", repeated twice, as well as the value in words "CINQ FRANCS". The engraver of this part of the banknote is Gilbert Poilliot, while the drawing is the work of Pierrette Lambert.
On the reverse, there is another portrait of Louis Pasteur, this time on the right, as well as a statue of the shepherd Jupille on the left. The background is adorned with test tubes, a microscope and various scientific instruments. Rabbits, sheep and roosters are arranged in the corners. The inscriptions repeat the nominal value "5" and the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE", also repeated twice. There is also article 139 of the Penal Code, which stipulates the penalties for counterfeiting or falsifying banknotes. Henri Renaud is the engraver of the reverse, and Pierrette Lambert is also the designer.
The watermark of this banknote represents the head of Louis Pasteur in profile.
