The 5 Francs Pasteur banknote, dated September 1, 1966, is part of the R.25 series and was issued by the Banque de France. It has a nominal value of 5 francs. The dimensions of this banknote are 140 mm in length and 75 mm in width.
The front of the banknote features a portrait of Louis Pasteur on the left. On the right, a representation of the Pasteur Institute is visible. Plant motifs, including bunches of grapes, also adorn this side. The inscriptions include the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE" and the value "CINQ FRANCS". Gilbert Poilliot is the engraver of this side, while Pierrette Lambert is the designer.
On the back, there is another portrait of Louis Pasteur, this time positioned on the right. A statue of the shepherd Jupille is on the left. The background illustrates test tubes, a microscope and various scientific instruments. Rabbits, sheep and roosters are arranged in the corners. The inscriptions include the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE" as well as article 139 of the penal code relating to penalties for counterfeiting banknotes. Henri Renaud is the engraver of this side, and Pierrette Lambert is also the designer.
The watermark of this banknote represents the head of Pasteur in profile. Article 139 of the Penal Code, mentioned on the banknote, stipulates that the counterfeiting or falsification of banknotes authorized by law is punishable by life imprisonment, as is the use of such counterfeit or falsified banknotes. Those who introduce them into France are liable to the same penalty.
