The Third Republic was the republican regime in force in France from 1870 to 1940. After the Capetian monarchy (802 years), it was the longest political regime France had ever known. In addition to this long duration (almost 70 years), the Third Republic is the regime that enabled the republic to establish itself permanently in the political history of France after the first two failures (1792 and 1848). Thanks to the Third Republic, the republican regime gradually gained legitimacy among the conservative right and royalism declined considerably.
