The 40 Francs gold coin was minted in France in 1812. It belongs to the period of Napoleon I, Emperor of the French and King of Italy.
The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Napoleon I, with his laureate head turned to the left. The engraver's signature, DROZ F, is visible on the edge of the neck, followed by a cursive Tr. The legend around the portrait reads "NAPOLEON EMPEREUR?" in Latin characters. Jean-Pierre Droz is the engraver of this face.
The reverse of the coin features a crown formed of two laurel branches, inside which is the inscription "EMPIRE FRANÇAIS?". The face value of "40 FRANCS?" is also indicated, as well as the year of issue "1812?" and the mint mark "A". Jean-Pierre Droz also engraved this face.
The coin weighs 12.9 grams and has a diameter of 26 millimeters. It is made of gold.
