Description

The 200 francs ?Montesquieu? banknote dated 1994, series K.159, belongs to the final circulation phase of this iconic Banque de France type, introduced in the late 1970s. It falls within a pivotal period, marked by the approach of the transition to the euro and the gradual end of the franc.

The obverse features the portrait of Montesquieu, a major 18th-century philosopher and author of The Spirit of the Law. His depiction is accompanied by elements evoking his ideas, notably the separation of powers, a fundamental principle of modern democracies. The engraving remains faithful to the classic and detailed style of French banknotes.

The reverse extends this theme with architectural and symbolic elements, evoking the institutions and the intellectual environment of Montesquieu. The whole maintains an educational and cultural dimension characteristic of French fiduciary issues.

From a technical point of view, the banknote is printed on secure fiduciary paper, incorporating a watermark of Montesquieu, as well as security features such as complex guilloche patterns and micro-printing. The print quality is high, with great finesse in the details.

The K.159 series corresponds to a specific combination of numbering and signatures. Banknotes from this late period are often well-preserved, as a significant portion was quickly withdrawn from circulation as the euro approached.

This banknote was demonetized in 2002, during the switch to the euro. Copies dated from the 1990s are particularly interesting as they correspond to the final years of the franc?s use.

From a numismatic point of view, the 200 francs Montesquieu 1994 series K.159 is appreciated for:

  • its late issue period

  • its frequently excellent state of preservation

  • its major philosophical theme

Finally, for the collector, this banknote constitutes a witness to the end of the French franc. It embodies both the continuity of a classic type and the transition to a new monetary era.
