Description

The 200 francs ?Montesquieu? banknote dated 1985, series J.032, belongs to the full circulation phase of this iconic type introduced in the late 1970s by the Banque de France. It is part of a period when French banknotes were distinguished by their high artistic quality and cultural purpose.

The obverse features the portrait of Montesquieu, a major 18th-century philosopher and author of The Spirit of the Law. His depiction is accompanied by elements evoking his ideas, notably the principle of separation of powers, the foundation of modern democracies. The engraving is fine and balanced, characteristic of French craftsmanship.

The reverse continues this theme by integrating architectural and symbolic elements, evoking the institutions and intellectual environment associated with Montesquieu. The whole retains an educational and cultural dimension, typical of French banknotes from that era.

Technically, the banknote is printed on secure fiduciary paper, featuring a watermark of Montesquieu, as well as security features such as complex guilloche patterns and micro-printing. The quality of execution is high, with great precision in the details.

The J.032 series corresponds to a specific combination of numbering and signatures. It belongs to an intermediate production phase, generally quite common, but which may be of interest depending on the state of preservation.

This banknote was demonetized in 2002, during the transition to the euro, ending its use in current transactions.

From a numismatic point of view, the 200 francs Montesquieu 1985 series J.032 is appreciated for:

  • its full circulation period

  • its major philosophical theme

  • its artistic quality

Finally, for the collector, this banknote is a classic and representative piece of the Montesquieu type. It embodies the elegance of French banknotes and the tribute paid to an essential figure of political thought.
