Superb French circulating coin minted in 1810 at the Lille mint (W) during the reign of Napoleon I (1804?1814), at the height of the First Empire. The famous Napoleon, the popular nickname for this gold coin, became one of the strongest symbols of European monetary stability in the 19th century.
The obverse features the laureate head of Napoleon I facing left, signed DROZ F on the neck truncation, with the inscription NAPOLEON EMPEREUR. The reverse shows, within a wreath of two laurel branches, the inscription EMPIRE FRANCAIS · 20 FRANCS · 1810 · W. The edge, inscribed in relief, bears the legend ? DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE.
Engraved by Jean-Pierre Droz, one of the greatest coin engravers of his time. Coin alignment (??). Demonetized on June 25, 1928, this piece is today strictly a collector's item and gold investment. Note: the Lille mint (W), active from 1685 to 1858, is one of the least represented in this series?Lille specimens are particularly sought after by collectors specializing in Napoleonic numismatics.
