The obverse of the coin depicts the Genius of Liberty, an allegorical figure standing with large angel wings. He is depicted writing on a stele resting on a small column. A drape is visible on his left shoulder, falling along his body. The Genius stands on a cippus. Behind him, there is a vertical fasces topped by the hand of justice. To the right of the scene, a rooster is perched on one leg. The engraver's signature, Dupré, is inscribed at the bottom, in the center of the coin. The inscription "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" is also present, written in Latin script.
The reverse of the coin highlights the French motto: "Liberté, égalité, fraternité", which encircles a crown of oak leaves. Inside this crown is the face value of the coin, "20 FRANCS", as well as the year of issue, 1875.
