Description

This 5 Francs banknote is a Necessity Note issued by the city of Saint-Quentin on August 20, 1915 (Series E) during the First World War, referenced Pirot 02-2045.

On the front, the mention "VILLE DE SAINT-QUENTIN" identifies the issuer, followed by the title "BON DE GUERRE" (War Bond). The face value of "CINQ FRANCS" is printed in green on a mauve background. The serial number, "N° 47.700", is located at the top right. An octagon on the left bears the mention "SAINT-QUENTIN / B. D. G. / 1915". The signature "LE 1er ADJOINT FAISANT FONCTIONS DE MAIRE, A. Gibert" authenticates the banknote. Two superimposed red/pink stamps with the word "PAYÉ" (PAID) indicate its use and reimbursement. The paper is cream/off-white with complex decorative patterns on the border and light mauve/purple tones.

The back features a framed security pattern, printed in dark green (or grey-green) on the paper background. The number "5" is repeated in all four corners. A large circular medallion surrounded by garlands, also containing the number "5", is placed in the center. On either side of the medallion, the initials "S.-Q." (for Saint-Quentin) are ornamentally inscribed. The entire design is intended to prevent counterfeiting.

A clause specifies that the banknote is "refundable upon presentation to the Municipal Treasury six months after the signing of peace".
