As the last representative of the small franc denominations before the arrival of the euro, the 1997 20 centimes Lagriffoul in Proof quality (BE) is an issue intended exclusively for collectors. Unlike standard circulation coins, this version features a particularly refined finish with mirror-like fields and frosted reliefs, characteristic of Proof strikes produced by the Monnaie de Paris.
Created by sculptor Henri Lagriffoul, this series was introduced in 1962 as part of the ?new franc? monetary reform. Its obverse features an elegant Marianne facing left, accompanied by the inscription ?République Française?, while the reverse displays the face value 20 centimes, the year 1997, and the republican motto ?Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité?.
Struck in aluminum-bronze, the coin has a diameter of 23.5 mm and a weight of 4 grams, with a smooth edge. It also bears the Monnaie de Paris mint mark used under the direction of Pierre Rodier, then Engraver General.
The 1997 Proof issue was produced in only 6,436 copies, making it a relatively rare strike compared to the versions intended for circulation.
