Often overshadowed by high-value francs or the legendary Monnaie de Paris sets, the 1993 20 centimes Marianne in Proof quality (BE) is nevertheless one of the most interesting French coins of the late 20th century for collectors of modern series.
Unlike examples intended for regular circulation, this coin has never circulated. It was specially minted by the Monnaie de Paris for the prestigious 1992 Proof set, designed for collectors seeking superior manufacturing quality.
This finish is distinguished by:
a mirror-like background
particularly sharp frosted reliefs
a more meticulous strike
optimal preservation when kept in its original case
The Marianne type, created in 1962, is one of the iconic coins of the Fifth Republic.
On the obverse appears the profile of Marianne wearing the Phrygian cap, the work of sculptor Henri Lagriffoul, a timeless symbol of the French Republic.
On the reverse, signed by Adrien Dieudonné, the face value is surrounded by an ear of wheat and a plant sprig, accompanied by the republican motto:
?Liberté ? Égalité ? Fraternitéâ€
An elegant engraving that accompanied the French people until the final days of the franc.
While the regular 1992 version was minted in nearly 89,965,011 copies, the Proof version was produced in only 5,309 copies.
