Description

Superb Semeuse type 2 Francs coin struck in Paris in 1913, one of the most iconic issues of the French Third Republic. This vintage, with a limited mintage of 500,000 examples, is one of the most sought-after in the series ? well below the usual mintages of several million pieces for other years.

The obverse features the famous Sower walking left, sowing into the wind beneath a rising sun, with the incuse signature O. ROTY ? the legendary engraver who created this iconic design in 1897, inspired by a poster by Puvis de Chavannes. The reverse displays the denomination 2 FRANCS flanked by two branches, an olive branch and an oak branch, with the date 1913 and the motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ.

Coin alignment (??). Demonetised during the monetary reform of 1928 that introduced the Poincaré franc.

Grade: VF ? circulated coin, sharp details, light even wear on the high points.
