An essential symbol of modern French currency, the 1993 2 Francs Semeuse Proof (BE) embodies the final hours of the franc before the arrival of the euro.
Unlike coins intended for daily circulation, this version has never circulated. It was specially minted by the Monnaie de Paris to be included in the prestigious 1993 Proof set, reserved for collectors and produced in limited quantities. This high-end finish is distinguished by:
a mirror-like background
exceptionally precise matte reliefs
a more refined strike
optimal preservation when kept in its original case
The famous Semeuse (Sower), created by Louis-Oscar Roty, remains one of the most iconic motifs in French numismatics. First appearing on French coins at the end of the 19th century, it is reborn here in a modernized version adapted to the contemporary franc.
The obverse features the female figure walking against the wind, sowing with full hands under a rising sun, accompanied by the inscription:
« République Française »
On the reverse, the face value appears in the center of a composition surrounded by oak and olive branches, as well as the republican motto:
« Liberté ? Égalité ? Fraternité »
A sober design that accompanied the French until the disappearance of the franc in 2002.
While the circulating 2 Francs were minted in the millions, the 1993 Proof version was limited to only 5,309 pieces.
