The 2 Francs Chambre de Commerce coin, minted in 1920, is a French coin with a nominal value of 2 francs. It is composed of a copper and aluminum alloy and weighs 7.74 grams, with a diameter of 27 millimeters. The edge of the coin is reeded.
The obverse of the coin features Mercury, the god of commerce, seated on the left on a bale of goods. He is slightly draped and wears the winged petasos, a traditional symbol of this god. His left hand rests on an antique rudder, while his right hand holds a caduceus, another attribute of Mercury. In the background of the bale, there is a cornucopia, a symbol of prosperity and wealth. Under a ground line, the year "1920" is framed by the signature "DOMARD INV.", indicating the name of the engraver, Joseph-François Domard.
The reverse of the coin features a rosette separating the beginning and end of a circular legend. This circular legend bears the inscription "CHAMBRES·DE·COMMERCE·DE·FRANCE". In the center of the coin, one can read "BON POUR" followed by the nominal value "2 FRANCS" and the indication of the metal "BR. AL.". The mint is identified by a mint mark located to the left of the metal indication. Joseph-François Domard is also credited as the engraver for the reverse of the coin.
The coin was minted at the Paris mint. It is noteworthy that some coins exhibit variations in the striking of the number "2", with "open" or "closed" versions. These variations are not due to different dies but to artifacts resulting from obstructed dies during striking.
