The 2 franc banknote issued by the Melun Chamber of Commerce in 1915 is a testament to the emergency issues during World War I. This type of banknote was produced to compensate for the lack of small change during the period of conflict.
The obverse of the banknote features the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE MELUN" in capital letters, indicating the issuer. The face value, "DEUX FRANCS", is also clearly visible. The signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce can be found there. A serial number, here "013024", is printed, as well as the date the banknote was issued, October 15, 1915.
The reverse of the banknote features the value "2f." repeated on either side, framing the years "1915 . 1920". The mention "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE MELUN" is present again, as well as the names of the cities of Melun, Provins and Fontainebleau, highlighting the geographical area concerned by this issue. An important indication specifies that the banknote had to be presented for reimbursement to the Banque de France in Melun before October 15, 1920. The name of the printer, "L. CASSAN AINE - TOULOUSE", also appears on the reverse.
The printer, L. Cassan Ainé, based in Toulouse, specialized in this type of printing. The period indicated "1915 . 1920" suggests a limited period of validity for this banknote, linked to the economic and monetary context of the time. All the inscriptions are written in Latin.
