Description

This 2-franc note was issued by the Montluçon-Gannat Chamber of Commerce, with ministerial authorization dated April 28, 1916. It is an emergency banknote issued during a period of monetary shortage during the First World War.

On the front, the words "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE MONTLUCON-GANNAT" are clearly written at the top of the note. Below, there is the mention of the ministerial authorization of "April 28, 1916." The signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce are affixed, thus authenticating the note. The mention "Series C" followed by a unique serial number (here, 24227) makes it possible to identify each note individually. You can also read "Exchangeable for banknotes of the Banque de France", indicating the convertibility of the note into national currency. The name of the printers, "HERBIN & BOUCHÉ MONTLUÇON", also appears on the front.

The back of the note contains only the name and location of the printer: "Fernand Herbin & Henri Bouché Imprimeurs, Montluçon, France." The absence of other decorative elements emphasizes the utilitarian function and simplicity of design of this emergency banknote.

This note is a testimony to local economic history during the First World War, where the Chambers of Commerce played a crucial role in managing the circulation of money in the absence of sufficient liquidity from the Banque de France.
