Description

This 2 Franc note was issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Montluçon-Gannat, France, with ministerial authorization dated October 5, 1915. It represents a form of emergency currency issued during a period of economic turmoil.

The obverse of the note features the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE MONTLUCON-GANNAT" in capital letters, highlighting the issuing body. Just below, the mention "Autorisation Ministérielle du 5 Octobre 1915" indicates the legal framework for its issuance. The functions of the "Treasurer" and the "President" are mentioned, probably with their respective signatures. The series "C" is printed, followed by the specific serial number "09.997". The promise of exchangeability is clearly indicated with the mention "Échangeable contre des billets de la Banque de France". Finally, the name of the printers, "HERBIN & BOUCHÉ MONTLUÇON", appears at the bottom of the obverse.

The reverse of the note is more sober, bearing only the name of the printer "Fernand Herbin & Henri Bouché Imprimeurs, Montluçon, France". This indication allows us to identify the company responsible for the production of the note.

The 2 Franc note from the Chamber of Commerce of Montluçon-Gannat is a testament to the alternative monetary practices implemented during the First World War to alleviate currency shortages and maintain local economic activity.
