This French banknote was issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Dated August 14, 1914, it represents a nominal value of two francs.
The front of the banknote features the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BOULOGNE-SUR-MER" at the top, followed by the statement "Délibération de la Chambre du 14 Août 1914". The face value "2" is clearly indicated, accompanied by the denomination "DEUX FRANCS". The signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce are also present. A serial number, "N 034.288", is printed on the banknote. The printer's name, "SOCIETE TYPO - LITHO. BOULOGNE", also appears.
In terms of graphics, the banknote has a sober and functional style, typical of emergency issues produced during times of crisis. The inscriptions are clear and legible, highlighting the issuing authority and the value of the banknote. The absence of complex ornaments reflects the context of urgency in which these banknotes were produced.
This type of emergency banknote was common during World War I, when reserves of metallic currency became scarce. Chambers of Commerce and other local institutions were authorized to issue their own currency to facilitate economic transactions. These banknotes bear witness to the economic and social history of France during this troubled period.
