Description

This 2 Francs note, issued by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce in 1914, belongs to the 2nd Series S. It is a redeemable voucher, exchangeable at any time for Bank of France banknotes at the Bordeaux branch.

On the obverse, the note displays the words "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BORDEAUX" in capital letters. The face value, "DEUX FRANCS", is clearly indicated. There are also the signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as the serial number "006,415". The inscription "ÉMISSION, EN 1914, DE BONS REMBOURSABLES À TOUTE ÉPOQUE, EN BILLETS DE LA BANQUE DE FRANCE, À LA SUCCURSALE DE BORDEAUX" is printed at the bottom of the note.

The reverse of the note features the number "2", corresponding to the face value. The Latin motto "QUO NON HAC DUCE" is inscribed, accompanied by the mention "XXI VIRI BURDIGALENSES COMMERCIS REGENDI". This inscription refers to the twenty-one men of Bordeaux responsible for regulating commerce.

The entire note is written in Latin, reflecting the era and the usage of financial and commercial institutions of the time. This note testifies to the particular economic and financial context of the First World War, where the Chambers of Commerce played an important role in the issuance of emergency currency.
