This 2-franc banknote, issued in 1914 by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce, represents a form of emergency currency issued in a particular economic context. This type of banknote was created to facilitate local transactions during periods of shortage of fiduciary currency.
The obverse of the banknote features several inscriptions in Latin. It includes the mention "2e Série A" as well as a unique identification number, in this case "003,003". The designation of the issuing institution, "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BORDEAUX", is clearly indicated, followed by the face value "DEUX FRANCS". The signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce authenticate the banknote. An important mention specifies that these vouchers are redeemable at any time in banknotes of the Banque de France, at the Bordeaux branch, thus emphasizing the guarantee of reimbursement.
The reverse of the banknote bears the number "2" in large format. A Latin inscription, "QUO NON HAC DUCE XXI VIRI BURDIGALENSES COMMERCIS REGENDI", is also present. This phrase, referring to the influence of the Chamber of Commerce, is followed by the mention "XXI VIRI BURDIGALENSES COMMERCIS REGENDI", which highlights the role of the twenty-one men of Bordeaux responsible for governing local trade.
All inscriptions are written in Latin, which gives the banknote an official and institutional character. The general aesthetic of the banknote is sober and functional, prioritizing the clarity of information and the identification of the issuer. This banknote testifies to the alternative monetary practices implemented to meet local economic needs during the period of its issue.
