This two-franc note was issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Nancy, France. It dates from November 11, 1918, a significant date marking the end of World War I.
The front of the note features the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE NANCY" in capital letters, followed by the face value "DEUX FRANCS". The note bears the mention "Série A" as well as a unique identification number, here "N°444.683". The writing used is Latin.
On the back, an important statement regarding the exchangeability of the note can be read. It is stipulated that "Tous les bons de la Chambre de Commerce de Nancy sont échangeables contre des billets de la Banque de France, jusqu'au 31 Décembre 1920." A clause specifies that "Le remboursement ultérieur n'en pourra plus être exigé." The date of issue, "11 Novembre 1918", is also mentioned, followed by the name of the printer, "IMPRIMERIES RÉUNIES DE NANCY". The writing is also in Latin.
This note has no watermark. It was printed by the Imprimeries Réunies de Nancy, in France.
This type of note issued by a chamber of commerce testifies to a time when local institutions could issue their own currency in response to specific economic needs, particularly during times of crisis or shortage of fiat money.
