Description

This 2 Francs banknote was issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Dunkirk. It is a type of paper money issued locally in France by institutions other than the Banque de France during periods of monetary shortage or to facilitate local commercial transactions.

The front of the banknote features the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE DUNKERQUE" in capital letters, highlighting the issuing authority. The face value, "DEUX FRANCS", is also indicated. The signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce are present. The name of the printer, "L. LECLERC. IMP. CHAIX.", also appears, identifying the artist and the printing company responsible for the production of the banknote. Léon Leclerc is identified as the designer of the banknote.

On the back, the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DUNKERQUE" is repeated, reinforcing the identification of the issuing institution. The watermark integrated into the paper represents leaves, a security element designed to prevent counterfeiting. The Chaix printing company, based in Paris, is mentioned as the printer, a company that operated from 1845 to 1965.

This banknote testifies to a time when Chambers of Commerce played an active role in the local economy, issuing their own currency to facilitate trade. It represents an interesting historical artifact for understanding local monetary practices in France.
