Description

Remarks:

Plis, salissures

The 2 franc coin issued in 1920 by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce is part of the continuity of necessity coins implemented during the First World War and extended into the post-war period. Despite the end of the conflict, the shortage of small change remained significant, forcing local institutions to continue these issues to support economic activity.

Bordeaux, as a major commercial port and strategic economic center, played a key role in this organization. The Chamber of Commerce issued these tokens to ensure the fluidity of trade, particularly for higher-value transactions, as shown by this 2 franc denomination.

The obverse features a simple and legible composition with the inscription ?CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BORDEAUX?, the value ?2 FRANCS?, and the year 1920. The design is intentionally functional, with clear typography adapted for everyday use.

The reverse adopts a sober style, sometimes embellished with discreet decorative patterns or geometric elements. As with all necessity coins, the artistic aspect remains secondary to the utilitarian purpose.

From a technical point of view, these pieces are struck in aluminum or light alloys, due to post-war economic constraints. Their lightness and appearance distinguish them clearly from traditional official coins.

This coin circulated locally and temporarily, mainly in the Bordeaux region. It was gradually withdrawn during the 1920s, when national currency production returned to normal levels. It no longer has legal tender status today.

From a numismatic perspective, the 1920 Bordeaux 2 francs is a prized piece. Its higher face value often makes it more sought after than smaller denominations, with generally more limited mintages. Well-preserved specimens are particularly desirable.

Finally, for the collector, this piece constitutes an important testimony of the post-war period. It illustrates the persistence of monetary difficulties and the prolonged role of local structures in maintaining the economy, making these tokens both historical objects and representative of a transition period.
