The 2 franc coin issued in 1914 by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce belongs to the first emergency coins put into circulation at the start of the First World War. The rapid disappearance of metallic currency, hoarded or used for the war effort, caused a significant shortage of cash, forcing authorities to authorize local issues to support the economy.

Bordeaux, as a major commercial port and strategic economic hub, played a major role in this organization. The Chamber of Commerce circulated these tokens to ensure the continuity of trade, particularly for higher-value transactions, as shown by this 2 franc denomination, relatively significant for the time.

The obverse features a simple and functional composition, with the mention ?CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BORDEAUX?, the face value ?2 FRANCS? and the year 1914. The design prioritizes readability, with clear typography suited for daily use.

The reverse adopts a generally sober style, sometimes adorned with discreet decorative motifs or geometric elements. As with all emergency coinage, the artistic aspect remains secondary to functionality.

Technically, these coins are struck in aluminum or light alloys, materials chosen due to the scarcity of traditional metals. Their lightness and appearance clearly distinguish them from classic coins made of noble metals.

This coin had a local and temporary circulation, mainly in the Bordeaux region. It was gradually withdrawn after the war, when national monetary production was restored. It no longer has legal tender today.

From a numismatic point of view, the 1914 Bordeaux 2 francs is a particularly interesting piece. Its higher face value often makes it more sought after than smaller denominations, with generally more limited mintage. Specimens in good condition are highly prized.

Finally, for the collector, this piece is a powerful testimony to the beginning of the conflict and its immediate economic consequences. It perfectly illustrates the adaptability of local institutions in the face of a brutal monetary crisis, making these tokens objects of high historical value.
