Description

The 1000 Francs banknote, issued by the Banque de France in 1944, embodies a specific period of French economic and social history. This banknote, dated July 20, 1944, belongs to the V.4684 series.

On the obverse, there are two women in profile, each inserted in a medallion. These allegorical figures symbolize Agriculture. The iconography is enriched with plant motifs such as bunches of grapes and ears of wheat, evoking fertility and abundance. Fauna elements, such as a butterfly, a bird and a rooster, complete this bucolic scene. The face value, "1000", as well as the mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE" are clearly indicated. The sum "MILLE FRANCS" is also written out in full.

The reverse of the banknote presents a bipartite composition. On the left, a worker stands in front of a metallurgical factory, representing Industry. On the right, the figure of Mercury, god of commerce, is staged in front of merchant ships, symbolizing commercial and maritime activity. The mention "BANQUE DE FRANCE" and the face value "1000" are repeated. A legal warning, extracted from article 139 of the Penal Code, warns against counterfeiting and falsification of banknotes, recalling the penalties incurred.

The watermark reveals a head of Flora, crowned with flowers, depicted in profile. The dimensions of the banknote are 195 × 118 mm. Engravers Camille Beltrand and Ernest Deloche contributed to the artistic creation of this banknote, while designer Henry Lucien Cheffer conceived the motifs.
