The 100 Francs ?Panthéon? coin issued in 1982 marks the beginning of an iconic series of French silver coins under the Fifth Republic. It inaugurates a type that would be minted for nearly two decades, quickly becoming a classic of modern French numismatics. This issue is part of a desire to promote the great symbols of the Republic through currency.
Iconographically, the obverse highlights the Panthéon of Paris, a monument dedicated to the great figures of the Nation. The building is accompanied by the famous inscription ?AUX GRANDS HOMMES LA PATRIE RECONNAISSANTE?, directly inspired by its pediment. Around it, the legend ?RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE? frames the composition, affirming the institutional character of the coin.
The reverse features a highly symbolic motif: a stylized tree inscribed in a hexagon, combining an oak and an olive tree. This choice evokes strength and peace, fundamental values of the Republic. The whole is surrounded by the motto ?LIBERTÉ · ÉGALITÉ · FRATERNITÉ?, with the face value 100 F. The graphic details even symbolize the colors of the French flag through the orientation of the leaves.
From a technical point of view, the coin is struck in 900? silver, with a weight of 15 grams and a diameter of 31 mm. It is produced using a quality industrial minting process by the Monnaie de Paris.
This coin was produced on a large scale between 1982 and 2001, with a total mintage exceeding 14 million copies, which explains its wide availability today. It was demonetized in 2002, during the transition to the euro, like all coins in francs.
From a numismatic point of view, the 100 Francs Panthéon is considered an essential basic coin. Its interest lies both in its precious metal, its strong republican symbolism and its founding role in the series of 100 silver francs. Accessible but emblematic, it is very present in collections, especially in uncirculated condition or in box sets.
Finally, for the collector, this coin represents much more than a simple currency: it embodies a lasting tribute to the great French figures, while marking the revival of silver issues at the end of the 20th century.
