The 10 Francs Victor Hugo coin, minted in 1985, is a French commemorative coin issued to mark the centenary of the death of the writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885). It has a face value of 10 francs.
It is composed of an alloy of copper, aluminum and nickel. The coin weighs 10 grams and has a diameter of 26 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features an open book on which a writing quill rests. An ancient theater mask is also depicted, symbolizing Hugo's role as a playwright. Various characters and elements from the work "Les Misérables" are included, such as Notre-Dame de Paris in the background, a barricade with Gavroche crossing it, and Cosette. Victor Hugo's signature completes the scene. The circular legend bears the inscription "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE", with the mintmarks and the year. The face value is indicated at the top, on two lines.
The reverse of the coin displays the circular legend "VICTOR HUGO". On three lines to the left, the years "1885 - 1985" are found. In the center, the bust of Victor Hugo is depicted, with a laurel branch to the right. The signature "C.LESOT" is inscribed under the bust.
The edge of the coin features an incuse inscription. There are two different edge types for this coin.
The engravers of this coin are Claude Lesot.
