The 10 Francs Stendhal coin, minted in 1983, is a commemorative coin issued by France to celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of the writer Stendhal, born in 1783. This coin comes from Brilliant Uncirculated (FDC) sets.
The coin's composition is an alloy of copper, aluminum and nickel, giving it a specific color and durability. It weighs 10 grams and its diameter is 26 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Stendhal, accompanied by the signature of his original name, "H. Beyle." The circular legend includes the writer's name, "STENDHAL," as well as the mention "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" and the dates of his life, "1783-1842."
The reverse of the coin depicts in the background the facades of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and Milan Cathedral, two important cities in Stendhal's life and work. In the foreground, there is an open book crossed by a writing quill, as well as a laurel branch symbolizing the honors associated with his position as consul. The face value, "10 FRANCS," is also indicated, as well as the year "1983" and the engraver's signature, "J. MAUVIEL."
The edge of the coin bears the incuse inscription "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE," separated by laurel and olive branches, as well as an ear of wheat. There are two variants for the edge: edge A (text readable obverse upwards) and edge B (text readable reverse upwards).
The engraver of this commemorative coin is Jacki Mauviel.
