The 10 Francs Mathieu coin, minted in France in 1984, is a commemorative coin with a face value of 10 francs. It is made of an alloy of copper, aluminum and nickel, giving it a specific color and properties. The coin weighs 10 grams and has a diameter of 26 millimeters. The mintage of this coin with the edge type B amounts to 40,001,847 copies.
The obverse of the coin features a stylized map of France, from which rays emanate. At the center of this map, we observe the interlaced capital letters "RF", representing the French Republic. The mention "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" is inscribed in capital letters, following the curvature of the coin. The name of the engraver, MATHIEU, is also present. The year of issue, 1984, appears on the obverse.
The reverse of the coin represents an industrial France in a stylized way. There are shapes evoking cranes, pylons and buildings, symbolizing the industrial activity of the country. The face value, "10 FRANCS", is inscribed in capital letters. The name of the engraver, Georges Mathieu, is also present.
The edge of the coin is engraved in hollow with the republican motto "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE", separated by symbolic motifs: a laurel branch for "LIBERTE", an olive branch for "EGALITE" and an ear of wheat for "FRATERNITE". There are two types of edge for this coin: type A, where the edge is readable with the map of France facing up, and type B, where the edge is readable with the face value facing up. The coin described here is type B.
