The 10 Francs Mathieu coin, minted in France in 1974, is a commemorative coin with a face value of 10 francs. It is made of an alloy of copper, aluminum and nickel, giving it a distinctive color and durability. The coin weighs 10 grams and has a diameter of 26 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features a radiating map of France. In the center of this map, the capital letters "RF" are intertwined. The inscription "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" is inscribed in an arc above the map, while the name "MATHIEU" and the year of issue, "1974", appear below. The engraver of this face is Georges Mathieu.
The reverse of the coin depicts stylized shapes evoking industrial France. Silhouettes of cranes, pylons and buildings can be seen. The face value, "10 FRANCS", is written out in full. The engraver of this face is also Georges Mathieu.
The edge of the coin is engraved in intaglio with the republican motto "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE", separated by plant symbols: a laurel branch, an olive branch and an ear of wheat. For this type of coin, there are two edge variants. The type A edge is identifiable by the fact that the motto is readable when the map of France on the obverse is facing upwards. The mintage of this coin with the A edge is 22,446,311 copies.
