Description

The 1966 10 Francs ?Hercules? coin is one of the most emblematic types of modern French numismatics. Issued under the Fifth Republic, it reprises a historical design created in 1796 by the engraver Augustin Dupré, already used during the French Revolution. This reuse reflects a strong desire to link contemporary currency to republican foundations.

The obverse features the famous scene known as ?Hercules union and strength?: the mythological hero is surrounded by the allegories of Liberty and Equality, which he unites with his arms. This composition symbolizes national unity and the solidity of republican values. The motto ?LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ? surrounds the whole, reinforcing the political and philosophical dimension of the coin.

The reverse adopts a more classic presentation, with the value ?10 FRANCS? inscribed in the center, surrounded by a crown of oak and laurel, symbolizing strength and victory respectively. The inscription ?RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE? as well as the year 1966 complete the composition, in a balanced and readable style.

From a technical point of view, this coin is struck in 900? silver, with a diameter of 37 mm and a weight of 25 grams, or about 22.5 g of pure silver. It belongs to a series produced between 1965 and 1973, intended for general circulation but largely hoarded due to its metallic value.

The year 1966 has a significant mintage, estimated at about 9.8 million copies, which makes it a common coin on the numismatic market today.

Faced with the rise in silver prices in the 1970s, these coins gradually disappeared from circulation, before being demonetized in 1980. They were often melted down, which explains their still significant presence but also their attractiveness as a safe haven.

From a numismatic point of view, the 1966 10 Francs Hercules is considered an essential coin. Highly appreciated for its powerful historical design, its high silver content and its liquidity, it is sought after by both collectors and investors.

Finally, for the collector, this coin represents a perfect balance between accessibility and symbolism. It embodies both the French revolutionary heritage and an era when currency still had a real intrinsic value.
