This 10 Franc commemorative coin, minted in 1984, pays tribute to François Rude on the bicentenary of his birth (1784-1984). It is composed of a copper, aluminum and nickel alloy, weighs 10 grams and has a diameter of 26 millimeters. This coin comes from a BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) set.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of François Rude, depicted at the age of sixty and dressed in his sculptor's attire. His signature is also affixed to the portrait, at the level of the beard, accompanied by the initials "RF" and a laurel branch. The circular legend mentions the name "FRANÇOIS RUDE" on two lines, as well as the dates of his birth and death, "1784-1855". Jean-Pierre Gendis is the engraver of this face.
The reverse of the coin features a detail from François Rude's major work, "The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792", also known as "La Marseillaise". The face value of "10 FRANCS" is inscribed, accompanied by the vintage "1984" and the mint marks. Jean-Pierre Gendis is the engraver of this face, while François Rude is credited as the designer for his original work.
The edge of the coin features the incuse inscription "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE", the motto of the French Republic, separated by motifs of laurel branches, olive branches and an ear of wheat.
