This 10 Francs commemorative coin, minted in 1983, celebrates the bicentenary of the first balloon flight (1783-1983). It comes from mint sets in Uncirculated (FDC) quality.
The coin is composed of an alloy of copper, aluminum and nickel. It weighs 10 grams and has a diameter of 26 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin depicts a gas balloon basket carrying two passengers. The face value of "10 FRANCS" is indicated, framed by the mintmarks and the year "1983". A circular legend bears the inscription "RÉPVBLIQVE FRANÇAISE". The engraver of this face is Daniel Ponce.
The reverse of the coin illustrates a hot air balloon rising into the sky, above a cheering crowd. The legend "CONQUÊTE DE L'ESPACE" appears in the upper part, while the engraver's name "D.PONCE" and the date "1783" are inscribed in the lower part. Daniel Ponce is also the engraver of this face.
The edge of the coin features the incuse inscription "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE", with laurel branches, olive branches and an ear of wheat serving as separators.
This coin is a numismatic testament to the historical event of the conquest of space, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the first balloon flight.
