Description
The French 10 centime franc coin, dated 1999, belongs to the so-called "Lagriffoul" series, named after the engraver Henri Lagriffoul who designed it. This issue marks one of the last years of minting of French currency before the transition to the euro, giving this vintage a special place in national monetary history.
This coin is struck in nordic gold, a metal alloy composed mainly of copper, aluminium, zinc and tin, characterised by its distinctive golden hue and good resistance to oxidation. It has a diameter of 20 millimetres and a weight of 3 grams.
The qualifier BU, an acronym for "Brilliant Uncirculated", denotes a state of preservation superior to that of coins intended for general circulation. BU coins are struck with particular care, on carefully prepared blanks, which gives them a brilliant appearance and a much more pronounced definition of relief. They show no signs of circulation.
The obverse of the coin features a wheat pattern surrounding the face value, symbolising French agricultural wealth, while the reverse bears the figure of Marianne, emblem of the French Republic. The inscriptions "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" and the face value of 10 centimes appear on the coin, accompanied by the date 1999.
As a coin of the French Fifth Republic, this 10 centimes Lagriffoul 1999 BU represents a tangible testimony to the French monetary system of the pre-euro era. Its face value is 10 French franc centimes, a monetary unit that has since disappeared with the adoption of the euro as the official currency in 2002.
