This 1 franc note is a local issue from the cities of Roubaix and Tourcoing, dating from a period when similar initiatives were put in place to alleviate currency shortages. The note belongs to the second series issued by these cities.
On the front, the face value "1fc" is indicated twice in the upper corners. The mention "VILLES DE ROUBAIX ET DE TOURCOING" clearly identifies the origin of this currency token. The mention "BON DE MONNAIE DEUXIÈME SÉRIE" specifies the type of value and its series of issue. A control number, here "4653", and a banknote number, "1146", are printed. The repayment guarantee is provided by the cities of Roubaix and Tourcoing, payable from the sixth month following the conclusion of peace. An important note emphasizes that the banknote must be stamped with the dry stamp of one of the two cities to be valid. The name of the printer, Louis Debode of Roubaix, also appears on the front.
The back features the coat of arms of the city of Roubaix on the left and those of the city of Tourcoing on the right. In the center, article 139 of the Penal Code is reproduced in full, informing of the severe penalties incurred in the event of counterfeiting or falsifying banknotes, as well as for the use or introduction of such counterfeit banknotes on French territory. The names of the two cities, ROUBAIX and TOURCOING, are inscribed under their respective coats of arms.
