Description

This French banknote, with a nominal value of one franc, was issued on June 5, 1917 by the Marseille Chamber of Commerce. It belongs to Series H and bears the signature of the Treasurer as well as those of the Delegate Members of the Chamber of Commerce.

The obverse of the banknote features the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE MARSEILLE" at the top, followed by the mention of the value "UN FRANC". The signatures of the institution's financial officers are also present.

The reverse of the banknote reproduces an excerpt from the deliberations of the Marseille Chamber of Commerce, dated June 5, 1917. It should be noted that the banknote was designed by H. Rouit and printed by Imprimerie Moullot & fils aîné, located in Marseille. The mention "H. ROUIT INVT & DEL IMP MOULLOT MARSEILLE" also appears on the reverse.

The banknote is written in Latin, the administrative language of the time, which underlines the official and legal nature of this means of payment issued by a recognized institution. The banknote's design, with its inscriptions and signatures, reflects the historical and economic context of France during the First World War.

This type of banknote, issued by a chamber of commerce, reflects the local initiatives taken to alleviate financial difficulties and the shortage of fractional currency during this period of conflict. It is a tangible testimony to the economic and social history of Marseille and France at the beginning of the 20th century.
